Earth Makes No Sound

Come and Sing!


Come and take part in this collaborative choral work inspired by environmental changes happening to our planet. Music director Osnat Schmool and movement director Sabina Netherclift of Filament Theatre are looking for people to participate in this innovative project – combining choral singing and movement theatre, stretching the traditional notion of what a choir is – no experience necessary, all voice types welcome, though we do ask that you feel strongly about the environment.

What next?

Once you have attended a Taster session, you will be invited to sign up to the performance project which will feature two songs from the full work plus a specially commissioned piece created in collaboration with researchers at The Institute for Sustainability at the University Surrey and supported by GSA’s Morag Morris Poetry Fund and The Institute for Sustainability.

If you would like to join you will need to attend five evening rehearsals followed by rehearsals and performances on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th May.

Please note: By signing up to the first rehearsal on 16th April, this will include every other rehearsal in April and May as well as the performance weekend on the 18th and 19th May.

More about the process:
This opportunity is open to all University of Surrey staff and student, and to local residents, with and without experience of performing and singing. 

We’re looking for people who want to explore voice and movement, with an interest in stretching the traditional notion of what a choir is. You should also feel strongly about the environment and have an interest in expressing your concerns. 

All voice types are welcome. Experience of singing with a group is preferred but not necessary and you don’t need to be able to read music to participate, but we do ask that you’re willing to work hard and are open to learning and collaborating with the group. 

We encourage everyone and people of all backgrounds to get involved, regardless of age, disability, sex, gender, sexual orientation, pregnancy and maternity, ethnicity, religion or belief.

Filament Theatre produces inclusive work featuring original vocal music for audiences and participants. Our shows can range from adaptations of children's books (Momo) to original music theatre (Drive Ride Walk) to our collaborative choral theatre piece, Earth Makes No Sound. The company is led by composer and choir leader, Osnat Schmool and director, Sabina Netherclift.
